Cytology is collection of samples by the use of a swab and laboratory examination of a smear is a useful aid in determining the most appropriate time to mate your bitch.

The period of acceptability to a male varies considerably among bitches. Some bitches are receptive well before and after the period of potential fertility. Similarly, Signs such as pro-oestrus bleeding are often unreliable indicators, some bitches bleed very little and others show bleeding throughout oestrus and into diestrus.

Cytology can be used as an effective predictor of the fertile time and the gestation length rather than behavioural or physical signs. We recommend testing from day 8 of a bitches season.
